Frequently Asked Questions

Common inquiries regarding training content, eligibility, and course certification for our basic crisis negotiations program.

How long is the basic course?

The course is conducted over five consecutive days, totaling 40 hours of practical and classroom instruction, typically running from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM daily.

Who is eligible to participate?

Participation is open to sworn law enforcement officers and corrections personnel who are currently assigned to, work alongside, or are interested in joining a crisis negotiation team.

Are there any course prerequisites?

While this is an entry-level course, all students must be active sworn members of a law enforcement agency.

Is a certification provided upon completion?

Yes. The training is KLEC certified and students will receive a certificate of completion documenting 40 hours of professional law enforcement training credit that can be applied to their annual in-service requirements.

Logistics & Policies

Training Location

All sessions will be held at the Lexington Police Department East Sector Facility, located at 4385 Clearwater Way, Lexington, KY 40515. Parking is available on site.

Daily Schedule

The course runs Monday through Friday from 08:00 AM to 05:00 PM. Full attendance over the 40 hours is mandatory for certification under KLEC guidelines.

Approved Attire

Attendees are requested to wear business casual attire or their agency approved training uniform. Please refrain from wearing shorts, open-toed shoes, or unprofessional attire. 

Required Equipment

No equipment or supplies are required. Note taking supplies and specialized negotiation equipment for practical scenarios will be provided. If your agency has specialized equipment you use, you are welcome to bring it and train with it. 

Payment & Registration

The registration fee is $250 per student. Payments can be made through check, cash, or Venmo. Checks should be made out to the "Lexington CPAAA" with "CNU" in the memo line and mailed to the Lexington Police Department, 150 East Main Street, Lexington, KY 40507 with ATTN to CPAAA. Payment must be received at least 10 business days prior to the course start date.

Cancellation & Substitution

Cancellations made within 14 days of the start date are non-refundable. However, agency substitutions are permitted at any time to ensure training slots are utilized.
